Bakuchiol is a plant-derived skincare active valued for its ability to support smoother, firmer and more even-looking skin. Research suggests that it can encourage several of the same visible skin-renewal benefits associated with retinol while generally being gentler and better tolerated.
In a randomized, double-blind study published in the British Journal of Dermatology, 44 participants used either 0.5% bakuchiol or 0.5% retinol for 12 weeks. Both groups experienced significant improvement in wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, while retinol users reported more scaling and stinging. The researchers concluded:
“Bakuchiol is comparable with retinol in its ability to improve photoageing and is better tolerated than retinol."
Additional clinical research has associated topical bakuchiol with improvements in the appearance of wrinkle depth, skin roughness, firmness, radiance, pigmentation and overall skin texture. However, the current body of human research remains smaller than the extensive research available for retinoids.
A Retinoid-Free Choice for Pregnancy-Conscious Skincare
Topical retinoids are vitamin A derivatives and are generally recommended to be avoided during pregnancy. Bakuchiol is chemically distinct from retinol and does not activate the same retinoic-acid receptors associated with fetal-development concerns. This makes it a commonly considered retinoid-free alternative for women who are pregnant, nursing or trying to conceive.
However, no controlled clinical studies have tested bakuchiol specifically in pregnant or nursing participants. For that reason, always consult your healthcare provider before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
